What is Naturalisation?
Naturalisation is the process of applying to become a British citizen. Once approved, you’ll receive a certificate of naturalisation and can apply for a British passport.
Who Can Apply?
You can usually apply if you:
Are 18 or over
Have lived in the UK for at least 5 years
Have held Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or Settled Status for at least 12 months
Are of good character and sound mind
Meet the English language and Life in the UK requirements
Have not broken any immigration laws
Key Requirements
Lived in the UK for at least 5 years
Have not spent more than 450 days outside the UK during that time
Have not spent more than 90 days outside the UK in the last 12 months
Hold ILR or Settled Status for at least 12 months
Pass the Life in the UK Test
Meet the English language requirement
Documents Needed
Current passport or travel document
Biometric Residence Permit or proof of Settled Status
Life in the UK Test pass certificate
English language certificate (if required)
Proof of residence in the UK
Two referees to sign your application
Any name change documents (if applicable)

After Naturalisation
