Apply for British Citizenship
You may be able to apply for British citizenship in several ways. The rules depend on your personal situation and history.
1. Citizenship by Living in the UK
You can apply if:
You have lived in the UK for a number of years
You have settled status or Indefinite Leave to Remain
You are married to a British citizen
2. Citizenship by Virtue of a parent/Grandparent
You may be eligible if:
One of your parents is British
You were born outside the UK to a British parent
You have a grandparent who was British or born in a British territory
3. Citizenship Through Historic Laws
Some people were not able to become British in the past because of unfair laws.
The UK now allows certain people to apply, including:
- People from the Windrush generation
- People from British Overseas Territories
- People whose parents were not married
- People whose mothers were British but could not pass on citizenship
- People with special cases under historic nationality laws
4. Citizenship for Children (under 18 years old)
Children may be able to get British citizenship if:
- They were born in the UK and have lived here for many years
- Their parents are British or became British
- They have a right through family or history
