What is the UK Ancestry Visa?
The UK Ancestry Visa allows Commonwealth citizens with a UK-born grandparent to live and work in the UK for up to 5 years.
It offers a flexible path to employment, self-employment, and eventually settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain).
Who Can Apply?
You can apply if you:
Are a Commonwealth citizen
Are 17 years or older
Have a grandparent born in the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, or Ireland (before 31 March 1922)
Can prove your ancestry with documents
Intend to work or be self-employed in the UK
Can support yourself and any dependants without public funds.
What You Can Do on This Visa
Live in the UK for 5 years

Study
Bring your partner and children
Apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after 5 years

Application fee: £637
You must also pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (approx. £1,035/year)
After 5 Years in the UK

Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)
Later, you can apply for British Citizenship
